DAY 1: SAN JOSE

Welcome to San Jose, Costa Rica!

Reception at the Juan Santamaria International Airport and transfer to your hotel in San Jose.

The capital city of San Jose, considered to be one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Latin America, is located in the middle of the Central Valley in the center of the country. The city features popular tourist attractions, such as historical buildings, museums, theaters, artisan markets, beautiful parks, shopping centers, and a varied gastronomic scene.

San Jose

DAY 2: SAN JOSE - CARTAGO - SAN JOSE (1.5 HRS. APPROX.)

Breakfast in the hotel.

Today you will visit the Irazu Volcano and the surrounding area. Fertile fields cover the volcano's slopes, where many kinds of vegetables are grown. Irazu is the highest volcano in Costa Rica. You can see the volcano's main craters at the summit, and on a clear day, you can see the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Afterward, you will journey to the Orosí Valley, which features beautiful landscapes. You'll stop for lunch at a local restaurant.

Then, you will tour the Lankester Botanical Garden, which protects more than 800 species of orchids and countless other plants. Finally, you will visit the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels, Costa Rica's most venerated religious shrine.

Irazu Volcano

DAY 3: SAN JOSE - ARENAL VOLCANO (3 HRS. APPROX.)

This morning you will travel to the Arenal Volcano in the Northern Plains region. Majestic in its grand stature, the volcano is one of the country’s natural wonders. While the volcano is quiet these days and there are no lava eruptions, you can still see clouds of smoke or ash emanating from the top of the cinder cone. As well, you can enjoy the plentiful hot springs in the area. Along your journey to the town of La Fortuna, at the base of the volcano, you will see agricultural plantations, large ornamental plant nurseries, and cattle farms.

Arenal Volcano

DAY 4: ARENAL VOLCANO

Breakfast at the hotel.

You will visit a local farm in the morning where they grow organic crops and follow environmentally friendly practices. You will learn about the importance of preserving Costa Rican rural culture and traditions and the main crops that have strengthened its economy. Afterwards, you will enjoy a typical Costa Rican lunch. In the afternoon, you will leave for the Coladas 2010 trek in the Arenal Volcano Ecological Park, Along a 2 kilometers journey through the tropical rain forest, You will be able to observe an incredible amount of flora and fauna that abound in the area, the trek will take you to a height of 620 meters, the highest point since where you can observe the lava flows from the period 1975 – 2010 with impressive views of the majestic Volcano and the lake at its feet. Definitely an unforgettable landscape!

Coladas 2010 trek

DAY 5: ARENAL VOLCANO

Today you will visit the enchanting Celeste River, whose vivid sky blue color makes it a popular attraction in the Tenorio Volcano National Park. Explore the park on a 4.5-mile (7 km) hike through the rainforest to the waterfall and “Los Teñideros,” which means “the dyeing pools” and is the point where the river begins its unique color. You will also visit the famous “Borbollones” or bubbling pools to learn more about volcanic activity. As you walk along the trails, you might meet some resident animals passing through the forest. Finally, your reward will be an exquisite traditional lunch.

Celeste River

DAY 6: ARENAL VOLCANO - RINCON DE LA VIEJA (3 HRS. APPROX.)

Today you travel to the Guanacaste Province to the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano, one of the five most active volcanoes in Costa Rica. Rincón de la Vieja is considered a fascinating volcano due to its unique characteristics, like sulfurous lagoons, relaxing thermal springs, boiling mud pits, fumaroles, and its main active crater. Lush, dense vegetation surrounds the area, home to a plethora of insect and wildlife species.

Rincon de la Vieja

DAY 7: RINCON DE LA VIEJA

This morning, you will go on a guided hike in the Rincón de la Vieja Volcano National Park, where you will find varied vegetation and a fascinating volcanic environment. You will learn the difference between humid forest, dry tropical forest, and cloud forest. The volcano has nine craters and volcanic cones at its summit and several cones on its slopes, all with variable heights. Afterward, you will go to the Oropendola Waterfall to take a refreshing swim in its breathtaking, emerald green water.

Rincon de la Vieja

DAY 8: RICON DE LA VIEJA - POAS (5 HRS. APPROX.)

Transfer in the morning to the Alajuela province to visit another of the most active volcanoes in Costa Rica. The Poás Volcano has one of the world's largest craters. It rises above the mountainous forests of the Central Volcanic Range. You will visit the Poás Volcano National Park, which boasts magnificent cloud forest landscapes. You also will see coffee plantations and enjoy the local culture of communities surrounding the park.

Poas Volcano

DAY 9: POAS - SAN JOSE (20 MINUTES APPROX.)

Breakfast in the hotel.

Today you depart to the Juan Santamaria International Airport. If your flight leaves before 16:00, you will require a private transfer for an additional amount.

    Recommendations:
    1. Passport with no less than 6 months of validity
    2. Travel alarm clock (some hotels have them, others do not; so, it's a good idea to bring one)
    3. Sun block and insect repellent
    4. Shirts: cotton or light synthetic, long and short sleeves
    5. Pants: lightweight cotton or synthetic pants. Bring at least 2 sets of clothes that dry quickly (jeans are not recommended; too slow to dry)
    6. Footwear: lightweight waterproof hiking boots, river sandals (Teva type sandals), tennis shoes
    7. Running shoes / sneakers. If you are not wearing hiking boots, be sure to bring TWO pairs of tennis shoes. As soon as a pair gets wet, wear them when your feet are likely to get wet. Make every effort to keep the other pair dry!
    8. Socks: bring extra pairs in case your feet get wet
    9. Swimsuit
    10. Rainwear: poncho, raincoat, and umbrella
    11. Hat(s) with a brim for protection against rain and sun
    12. Reusable water bottle for walks
    13. Also, extra batteries, mobile device charger and plenty of memory
    14. Cell phone – you can purchase a local phone service chip upon arrival. Be sure also to bring your cell phone charger
